After reading the Cummings - Cuban posts I think I know why Cummings and Grady made the deals with Ampex. They know that they must get ahead of the big Broadcasting firms CBS, NBC, ABC, and Fox. But the progress of bandwidth was progressing too slow allowing the slower big companies to operate at thier pace. Ampex has stated before that they have no technology to improve bandwidth. But they also have never said that they were not working on something. And we now know Ampex is working on something and compression is at least part of it. Also Ampex needed some experiance to provide content. They cannot rely on the market to be savy enough to buy thier equipment. I expect Cummings and Grady to be a big part of the new sites that Ampex is developing. They are the content guys to get the contracts and personnel to do the video programming and old Ampex is the hardware guys providing the equipment to give them the edge. This also increases the odds of success. If the hardware only gives them an incremental edge or someone comes out with something better then they could make it on the content of their sites. If the big broadcasting companies win the content war then maybe they will buy Ampex hardware.

<<Is this the business model which approaches the meaning of ----- "juggernaut?">>

Well said, Ed. Yeah...seems so to me. Vividly. This time around AXC's timing seems impeccable. And their head start extremely meaningful. Delighted with their direction and business progress. Stock progress normally follows.

Ed,
I agree one hundred percent with your assessment pertaining to the importance and viability of Ampex's strategy and expertise as it relates to positioning for the competitive arena in the digital battles.

Ed Bramson and his strategic partners are covering all of the important areas from "soup to nuts." East coast, west coast production facilities, new channels coming online regularly by Dave Grady's Tv onthe Web, high rating for Alternative Tv, and preparation for the launch of the Executive Branch Tv, all of these things and more constitutes the juggernaut I referred to in an earlier post.

But let's not forget that a very potent adjunct to all of this, is Ampex's Brand recognition. That's very important when it come to bolstering confidence in its products when entering a new field so packed with many new and untried competitors.

Although, I agree that it is "not your father's Ampex" as has been often stated on this thread and the Yahoo thread, it nevertheless has some very important intrinsic value, IMO.

DrD

This ( FIRST ) compilation of questions ( from May 28-29 ) addresses the interactive meeting with Ed Bramson scheduled for June 28, 1999. For the rationale behind this effort, see:

Message 9838146

FINANCING

Where's the money to fully develop Ampex's plans going to come from?
...Hal Campbell - SI 5/28

JOINT VENTURES and PARTNERING

Ampex may need financing soon and Kodak needs digital expertise due to the Video Market going digital. Is Ampex doing any joint venture research with Kodak who has great photographic expertise?
...Skip Miller - SI 5/28

Do we have some potential partners yet with the clout and cash? Is anyone even interested? No names need be mentioned, but a confirmation to that would be satisfying for now. That's all I need to know. Without one, it'll be tough.
...Al Cassaro - SI 5/28

SHAREHOLDER ISSUES

One of the first questions that comes to my mind is actually a request of Ampex HQ to grant participation of any IPO's that may arise to be offered on favorable "insider" terms to long term shareholders.
...digger - SI 5/29

AFFILIATE OPERATIONS and RESULTS

As TVW grows are they remaining profitable?
...digger - SI 5/29

What "rights" to "shows", ie "Sonny & Cher" does AENTV actually own if any?
...digger - SI 5/29

Are TVW & AENTV keeping stats on hits to sites and is there any % change worth noting?
...digger - SI 5/29

My main question at this point regards the business plan for AENTV. What is their source of revenue? Advertising?
...Carl R. - SI May 29

ROYALTIES and RELATED
Is Ampex Data Systems receiving any royalties from digital cameras?
...digger - SI 5/29

Does Ampex feel royalties will grow from here?
...digger - SI 5/29

CORE BUSINESS COMPETITION

How can AXC compete for content with broadcast networks that have in some cases been in existence for over 50 years?
...JoCo - SI May 29

Can AXC provide any value added to archived network content by digitizing?
...JoCo - SI May 29

LEGAL MATTERS and SETTLEMENTS

Regarding details of the Mitsubishi settlement. While not related to the operational aspects of the Internet strategy, it can be argued that it is a funding source. I haven't seen any evidence that this question was asked at the annual meeting (hope I'm wrong on this).

What is his price target for when he will consider selling some of his axc holdings?
...digger - SI 5/29

Will there be a company sponsored field trip to Malta for the grand opening of TVW Europe?
