I guess it all comes down to whether the manufacturers want to sell
direct or not.

My guess on this is most manufacturers that make a variety of products will not. They want and need to focus on production and being efficiant. The retailer is value added for distribution and it is not an area of focus for broad lines of manufacturers. That does not mean the percentage received by the retailer will not be squeezed much further down.
