Actually, there was little desire on the part of the US to become involved with Israel due to its Socialist politics. If it were not for British and French bungling over the Suez Canal issue, the US probably wouldn't have bothered to get involved. We were, after all, very busy creating a petroleum industry in the Persian Gulf and the last thing we were interested in doing was alienating the Sheikdoms whom we were preparing to make fabulously wealthy beyond their belief.
