American Power Conversion Extends Smart-UPS(R) Line with Compact 5000VA Tower Model for Protection of Multi-Server Environments
WEST KINGSTON, R.I., June 7 /PRNewswire/ -- American Power Conversion (APC) today further expanded its power protection offering for multi-server environments with a new condensed size 5000VA tower uninterruptible power supply (UPS). The new APC Smart-UPS(R) 5000 has a footprint of 8.7" x 17", which is among the smallest tower 5000VA units in the UPS industry. The cost- effective Smart-UPS 5000 addresses two growing industry trends: the demand for high power servers which use 208 volts AC and the need to centralize all servers and related equipment, such as a server farm or a small data center. APC previously announced the Smart-UPS 5000 rack-mount model at the end of 1998.
The APC Smart-UPS 5000 is at the forefront of the industry by offering two management-customization slots, providing increased UPS management flexibility, without compromising valuable space. By utilizing APC's extensive selection of accessories, which include environmental, Web-based, and out-of-band management capabilities, network managers can simply monitor, manage, and protect servers and related network equipment. To maximize this benefit to the customer, APC will bundle its Web/SNMP Management Card accessory, which is integrated via the UPS's management slot, with each Smart- UPS 5000 tower and rack model sold through September 30, 1999. With its industry-recognized, standards-based protocols, such as Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), Telnet and Web technology, the Web/SNMP Management Card allows users to manage APC devices via Web browsers in addition to industry-leading management platforms, including Tivoli Enterprise, HP OpenView and CA Unicenter.
"By offering multiple slots in the compact Smart-UPS 5000, APC is able to help increase network availability by providing flexible and comprehensive management features, allowing network managers to monitor and control their computing environment remotely," said Ed Bednarcik, general manager of APC's Business Networks. "As the business criticality of the network continues to increase, a reliable power protection and management solution is one of the most cost-effective ways to help ensure systems availability."
The Smart-UPS 5000 tower and rack-mount models will ship with APC's award- winning PowerChute(R) plus UPS management software, designed to work with the most widely used network operating systems. This management package performs automatic unattended system shutdown as well as important management and diagnostic features. PowerChute plus also gives network administrators flexibility in configuring UPS reaction to power events. For each possible power event the user has the option of choosing up to seven items from a list of possible UPS actions, such as Log Event, Notify Users, and Shutdown Server.
Additional Smart-UPS 5000 features and benefits include:
-- Intelligent battery management system
A high precision battery charge system with automatic true-load battery tests improves reliability. Redundant overcharge protection and continuous, non-pulsed charging are additional battery life enhancements provided by the APC Intelligent Battery Management system. Batteries last longer and warning is provided before batteries wear out.
-- Hot-swappable, user-replaceable batteries maximize uptime
User-replaceable batteries can be swapped out easily and quickly without powering down the connected load. This saves time and the expense of returning the UPS to the factory for battery service.
-- APC's SmartBoost(TM) and SmartTrim(TM)
The Smart-UPS 5000 accepts input voltages between 155 and 255 volts without transferring to battery, ensuring that critical equipment receives regulated input voltage during brownouts and overvoltage conditions, thus increasing equipment availability. This feature reserves battery capacity in the event of a prolonged power disturbance and increases battery life.
-- Auxiliary 120-volt outlets (208-volt unit only)
Auxiliary 120-volt outlets provide power for monitors and peripheral equipment.
The Smart-UPS 5000 tower and rack models are available immediately in most countries worldwide in both 208-volt and 230-volt versions. The list prices are $3,750 for the tower model and $3,950 for the rack-mount version.
