The first time I had mine pumped they opened it up and it didn't stink. I thought "my shit don't stink". Then they stuck the hose in and broke the scum seal WHEW!!

I have two 500 gallon tanks which I think is better than one 1,000 gallon tank. The solids sink in the first one so they only need to pump the first 500 gallons if and when you have it pumped.

The baffle on the second tank stops the sludge from ruining your field.

You're probably looking at 6 to 10 large depending on how big a field you need and your perk test where they test to see how fast your ground will absorb the water.

If you have a softener and I guess you do if you have a septic field, don't discharge it into your waste system. The salt eats the concrete tanks and plugs your field.
