I don't know for sure. My quick read of the Maintenance Draft - HIPPI-PH (Rev 8.2, 2/4/99) shows that the distance specs are vaguely worded (it is a pdf).

The original specs are for 25m twisted cable, but I believe I posted serial HIPPI specs here a year ago that were for a lot longer. Very high cost per port appears to be the most limiting factor at this time along with the bus cabling, according to an FC engineer I talked to. The cabling issue may not apply to serial HIPPI.
