One could just as easily claim America was founded to make money by referring to the charters of the companies that founded, funded, and recruited colonists for the Jamestown and Plymouth colonies. The settlers themselves were employee/shareholders (they were granted shares for coming to America). The funds were put up by merchant investors i.e. venture capitalists in modern terminology. In the charters, the organizers of the companies were referred to as the "adventurers" because they ventured their funds, though they didn't take the adventure of coming to America themselves.

Despite the "undertaken for the Glory of God . . " language, the colony was actually founded to make a profit for the shareholders.
