David I appreciate the time it took to respond. And I think you are a sincere person but I just do not see what it gets me for, as you say, them to know anything about me.

It is like someone standing outside a store and keeping up with ever time I walk in the store or someone following me around and writing down everything that I stop to look at. It isn't that it necessarily HURTS anything ... it is the fact that it is NONE of their business unless I choose to make it their business by buying their product.

I for one am unwilling to allow EVEN a SMALL PART of my right to PRIVACY to be infringed upon.

The reason many like myself are distrustful is that too many times what has started as an INNOCENT thing became something much more. An example is the data MSFT was gathering that they said WAS NEVER RELEASED OR USED AND IS NOW DESTROYED(or so we are told).

The industry itself is what has caused this distrust.

Now, let me say that I am not paranoid but I am VERY PROTECTIVE of any right that my forefathers provided for in the Constitution. I will not knowingly allow ANYONE FOR ANY REASON, no matter how innocent, infringe on ANY OF THEM.

You make the statement:The only cookies that a site can gain access to are the ones that were made by earlier visits to that same site.

Now, if multiple sites use say doubleclick. Are you telling me doubleclick does not have the ability to gather data from multiple sites that I visit?

This is not meant as a personal afront to you and I hope you do not take it as such.

Monty

David, just ran across this.

news.com

"This is going to be a further restriction. Cookies are a very viable resource for advertisers and commerce Web sites. It allows the Web site to identify frequent visitors. It could be your name, password, something unique about your buying habits," Seven said

David Yoder, media director for Anderson & Lembke, agrees that the default-setting proposal would make cookies almost useless. His agency buys all online advertising for Microsoft, which he said benefits from cookies.

"It is an advantage of our clients and the users. This proposal would hurt the sites because they won't be able to sell their ad space at a higher cost-per-thousand. Cookies are only as good as how broadly they can be spread," he added.

Still, those backing the proposal say protecting privacy is more important than advertisers making a buck.

Sorry, but I just don't go for the "TRUST US WE WILL NOT ABUSE THE INFORMATION".

While your response is the accepted norm and what we are supposed to believe, I did a little research whenI was considering making my private site public and was amazed at what I found out.

Cookies can be read by sites other than your own and are used by "other" sites to decide what types of ads to run when youvisit them. If you have a multitude of cookies from investment sites, you will get all investment ads at the "better" sites that use cookie scans, if you frequent porn sites, you will get mostly those types of ads. Even many of the book sellers will aim the new releases ads to the type of sites you frequent.

It is for that reason I stay away from geocites and MSN sites as they are some of the most prolific cookie spammers on the the web. If I have to click no when promted for acceptance of cookies more than 3 times on a site, I am gone and usually more than twice will keep me from being a repeat customer unless it is a great site.

JMHO,,Good Luck,

Lee
