Scumbria,

Re: K7 and Intel,

I don't share your views on the effects of the K7 on Intel.

I have little doubt that the K7 will be great. Unfortunately AMD simply does not have the capacity to make much headway till 0.18 and dresden ramps up. Having said that, the effects on AMD in terms of profitability and stcok preice should be excellent.

The other key is that it raises the barrier of entry for anybody else wanting a piece of the x86 market.

By early next year K7 at 100mm2 and 0.18 micron should be running in 800-1Ghz range.

And probably this time next year Intel will have willamette which will give AMD a run for its money.

This will be good for both companies.

Folks like Rise and IDT will have to fold in the desktop space. As the "low end" from both Intel and AMD at that time will be 600Mhz. And neither of these guys has the werewithall to generate a K7/willamette class core for several years.

I see good things in a duopoly over the next few years.

AMD's stock price can easily be 2-10x what it is today if they execute well. And Intel cane be easily 2-4x what it is today as the server space keepg growing to the Internet ans as Merced/Mckinley captures market share in the enterprise space.
