China Unicom to Buy CDMA Hardware From Overseas, Paper Says

Beijing, May 31 (Bloomberg) -- China Unicom, the nation's second-largest telecom company, will
select two or three foreign telecom equipment suppliers to help build its CDMA mobile network this
year, the Hong Kong edition of the China Daily Business Weekly reported, citing Tan Xinghui,
general manager of Unicom's planning and marketing department. Unicom plans to invest 7 billion
yuan ($843 million) to establish a nationwide CDMA network with an initial capacity of two million lines
this year. The capacity will be expanded to 10 million lines covering 160 Chinese cities next year, the
paper said.

Since its establishment in 1994, China Unicom sought to carve out a niche in China's fast-growing
mobile telecom market against stiff resistance from China Telecom, the former monopoly. (China Daily
