Chuzzlewit, Why go to those who don't even believe in God for answers? Bibles are not outlawed in this country. If you really want some answers then I would suggest that you read the Bible starting in Genesis, and go all the way through to Revelation. Ask God to give you some insight. By the time your done you will probably have thrown it across the room more than a few times, most likely rip a few pages out when a nerve is hit and curse more often than not. Hopefully though when it's all said and done you will have a better understanding of how God views sinners and the plan of salvation he has laid out for those who are willing to put their faith in Him. Well, I think God created Satan because he wanted to keep a simplistic duplicity going. You know, good and evil. And I bet he wanted to terrify poor people so they would behave and not cause and social unrest. Once he had them all terrified, the rich were very happy because they could continue to have all the goodies. So maybe God is a rich guy. Of course, that theory gets all mixed up, because in the Inquisition and some of the other more spectacularly evil massacres IN THE NAME OF GOD, it is obvious that Satan is actually in charge up there in the fantasyland of the pearly gates and soothing harp music. So maybe God IS Satan, you know, and heaven is all just a house of mirrors?
