Thanks for looking all that up about Civil War songs, Christopher. It was very interesting. Except for the people who ran the Underground Railroad, some parts of the clergy, and some human rights activists, I would agree that most Northerners didn't really know what to do with slaves, either, and probably would not have welcomed them with open arms into their communities.

There is an article by Christopher Hitchens in the current Vanity Fair magazine which is about how America is one of only four countries in the world which executes children under eighteen years old. And interestingly, it is one of only two countries on earth which has not ratified a U.N. resolution on the rights of children, the other one being Somalia. Although at the same time, we are RABIDLY interested in the human rights of people wherever it is in our political self-interest to be so, and actually bomb countries where human rights are being violated, killing quite a few innocent civilians in the process. So it is not really surprising that in the nineteenth century, we were supporting lofty political ideals and our own motives at the same time.
