But after the Dred Scott decision, the South no longer had to fear their legal right to continue slavery within the union. There were other reasons for secession. Like virtually all wars throughout history, the primary motivations for the war were economic.

The basic rules of understanding war, as of understanding crime, as of understanding almost all human activities: 1) who benefits? 2) follow the money. (Or, in the vernacular, It's the Economy, Stupid.)
