Christine, I would settle for the tax system to stop mandating my indirect support of churches. Assuming that the government requires x dollars in revenue, every dollar that is exempted from taxes because of religious donations causes the tax rate of the entire population to increase to compensate for the shortfall. As a simple example, assume that the tax base is $1 million, and the government requires $300,00 to operate. That would imply a 30% tax rate (remember, this is a highly simplified example). Now suppose that the tax base consists of 50% religious contributors and 50% non-contributors. Suppose further that the contributors gave 10% of their taxable income to the church. That reduces the the tax base to $950,000. But the government still requires $300,000. So it compensates by raising the tax rate to 31.6% which all must pay.

Why should I be forced to support religious organizations?

TTFN,
