RE:DELL-CNBC-unbelievable-talking about E-commerce -They don't even mention DELL when it is the leader and most sucessful company actually doing it-DELL is not going to be the stock of the decade-plus the past 50 years for nothing-The game is still "talk-it-down"so I can steal it from you.wbm

Maybe someone else on the thread, say Mark or Chuzz, would be able to respond more cogently and precisely and with better t.a. than I would or ever could. My response is probably too vague for you: It would go something like this...In the hummingbird years of the internet, Wetherell got there ahead of anybody else, even before they saw it,, prescient, bold, swift and lucky, but anyway, he got in with relatively small investment, made canny choices, and even with current nut correction, the percentage gain is so huge he has been able and still continues to parlay it to make many other acquisitions. SFE is the other competitor in the arena--but CMGI receives 1-2,000 business plans a month--SFE may offer all shareholders IPO participation, which may ramp them up in terms of visibility, but they're still firmly in 2nd place. CMGI the known "gorilla". So how could a 3rd company build it up at this point--I think it's improbably difficult because of timing.

Here's brief summary I'm sure you already know: CMGI develops and operates Internet and direct marketing companies as well as venture funds focused on the Internet. For the six months ended 1/31/99, revenues totalled $76.4 million, up from $37.8 million. Net income totalled $52.7 million, vs. a loss of $3.1 million. Revenues benefitted from the acquisitions On-Demand Solutions and InSolutions. Net income also reflects a $28.5 million gain on the stock issuance by Geocities, and a $46.5 million gain on the sale of Lycos stock. Market cap is 9.67 billion.

But anyway...it's not that DELL ever would buy CMGI, it's just that Mark and others are stirring up some wonderfully outlandish dreamy ideas, and we all want DELL to do something significant, whatever that may be. Buying an ISP seems pointless to me, anyway...I don't even understand how merging an ISP deal w/ computer and service really benefits them, but maybe I'm wrong.
