I like Dreyfus quite a bit. It isn't a fancy site with all sorts of pretty charts and Java stuff. It's very very spartan, no graphics. But it's also very fast, trade confirmations come back quickly, and I've never had a problem. Whenever something odd happens (I put in an order for an option not trading yet, say) a customer service rep calls me to explain what happened. I've found their people to be friendly and smart.

Overall, I'm very satisfied with them. If I could get real time quotes more easily than faking an order placement, and see my account status with real time quotes, I'd be perfectly happy. :)

I am considering a second online brokerage for my options. Either Waterhouse, Mr Stock, or Benjamin & Jerold which lets you trade options in IRAs. The first two allow spreads using LEAPs as a surrogate to the stock.

William,

I know I am going to catch heat for this but...I trade options almost exclusively and I use E*Trade(or E*Trash<g>). I have had excellent executions and even some fills outside of the bid/ask. (How'd that happen?) I would not recommend them for stock trading; but for options, they have never given me any problems. Their commissions are a little high at a $29 minimum up to 10 contracts.

FWIW,
Chris

Preferred Capital Markets. preftech.com or deltatrader.com

Be sure to get the Delta Trader Pro application. It's MUCH better than using the web site. You get multiple levels of confirmation as your trade works it's way through the system. They do option trades as fast as Datek USED to do stock trades... The quotes are real-time on Pro, BTW, but are delayed on the web site.

The only drawback to Pro is that is doesn't do option analytics, which are available on the web site. But with delayed quotes, the analytics on the web site are not all that useful. (Good for end-of-day stuff, though.) The Java applet for the analytics can act a bit flakey and takes some getting used to.

They also have GREAT telephone responsiveness, and I believe the same commission rates for phone trades. And very good commission rates - it's a $19.95 MINIMUM and I think $2.50 per contract. (Not $19.95 + so much per contract.) All of my trades have been $19.95.

They specialize in options trading, and offer statuatory-minimum margins on spreads, etc.

Besides all that, I think they are just plain good karma. I've doubled the value of my account in the 6 weeks since signing up with them. :)
