less than 1/3 of MSFT's R&D is done in the research group - the rest is R&D associated with product development. You're right, there has been little of note coming out of MSFT recently. CPQ spends more than $2B on R&D but you at least get new Alpha chips, innovative I/O architecture, new storage technology... Probably the culture disconnect you refer to has a lot to do with the fact that these very talented people have little impact on MSFT technology or business direction.
