If, on the other hand, Comcast buys or trades for the partnership, then ATHM suffers a net loss in subscribers, since MediaOne has fewer subscribers than Comcast.

I'm not sure I understand this point.

Comcast has more subscribers than MediaOne, so if Comcast were to switch from @home to RoadRunner and MediaOne switched from RR to ATHM, the net result would be fewer total subscribers for ATHM.
