ISDEX futures trading gets underway in Kansas City
KANSAS CITY, Mo., June 1 (Reuters) - Traders packed the pit
on Tuesday as the opening bell sounded for the debut of the
Kansas City Board of Trade's futures and options trading based
on the ISDEX index of Internet stocks.
Opening trade was light with only one or two contracts
offered, and some traders complained of problems with price
postings. But laughter and applause broke out in the pit when
one trader called out a cash register-like "ka chang" after
successfully completing an opening trade.
"I think we're going to have a very successful contract,"
said KCBT president Michael Braude on Tuesday shortly before
the opening bell. "We're totally excited about it."
Traders were reserving judgment, however, as order flow was
lackluster.
"It's kind of like the chicken and the egg," one said.
"Everyone wants to see how it goes before they jump into it."
The first trade was for two contracts at $5.11. Volume was
very light, about 17 contracts in the first 10 minutes of
trade.
Steve Harmon, an Internet analyst and a partner in the
development of ISDEX, said on Tuesday that he had been
receiving inquiries from people around the world interested in
trading the ISDEX.
ISDEX (http://www.isdex.com) contains 50 stocks
representing widely diverse, publicly traded U.S. companies
that derive revenue primarily from the Internet.
The basket includes stocks from the software, hardware,
content, commerce and communications/access sectors. Among the
stocks are America Online Inc <AOL.N>, Yahoo Inc <YHOO.O>., and
eBay <EBAY.O>.
