Hi wily,

The main difference between running Scandisk in thorough or standard mode is that thorough will do all of the standard tests as well as a physical surface check of your drive, which can take quite a bit of time. It's good to do a surface scan every month or so. Can identify bad sectors and other problems.

A standard test looks for lost clusters, broken links, truncated file names and various little hard drive problems. Usually doesn't take more than a minute, if that.
