IRID: The estimated 5 year life is correct. It is due to the low orbit being used. The low orbit was chosen so as to keep the phones pocket sized (power and range limited) instead of suitcase sized to hit higher sats-like geosynchronous. We are talking hundreds of miles high, not thousands of miles high.

Also, at the low altitudes you would need a slew of them to provide 24 hr a day coverage on the 80-90% of the earth's locations they hoped to cover. Hence high replacement costs.

BTW, tried to short IRID awhile back and no shares to short at my broker.
