Reader, I suspect that just like IBM's eSuite for Java, that Microsoft and IBM are watching Linux closely and probably are already coding for it "just in case." But as Leo said, the office market for Linux may not be that big. Two issues:

1. Microsoft has recently placed an update for Win 98 on their site which solves stability issues when the system is left running for extended periods of time. The message here is that Microsoft understands the "stability" threat posed by Linux and is taking preemptive strikes in that direction.

2. In 2001, Microsoft will release a 64 bit version of Windows 2000 which may allow them to maintain existing marketshare and increase it further in the businessplace. My guess is that "crashproofing" will be a major factor in the product.

But as your article points out, its important for Corel to build significant cash with WP and Draw to capitalize on any rise in usage of Linux.
