Tech2000, One of MSFT's investments is going to pay off. Intel's announced acquisition of Dialogic for $44 per share in cash will result in a gain for MSFT from their investment in the company.

From MSFT's website: " Microsoft has made a $24.2 million equity investment in Dialogic by purchasing from the company approximately 860,000 shares of common stock. This represents 5 percent of Dialogic's outstanding common stock. Dialogic also has issued to Microsoft four-year warrants to purchase approximately 280,000 additional shares of Dialogic common stock at $35.19 per share. Microsoft has agreed to refrain from selling any shares for a period of one year and 50 percent of the shares for two years."

I would imagine that as a result of the Intel acquisition, the restrictions on selling the stock will be voided and Intel would buy MSFT's shares of Dialogic. I would presume that the warrants would also generate a gain for Microsoft.

Over the long haul, I am a firm believer that Microsoft's various investments are going to pay off big time. Here's a list of their investments. microsoft.com

OTOT..Don't worry, even Americans get confused by American politics. There was a recent article in the WSJ comparing economics of living in Canada vs. USA. Canadian tax burden is 29% higher than in US according to OECD. The CEO of Nortel has pointed out that it is getting difficult to attract skilled workers to Canada because a Nortel engineer take home pay in Texas is US $72,000, but a Canadian worker on the same pay scale takes home the equivalent of US $ 56,000. I guess Canadians think the wealth and income gap is worth it because the government welfare teat flows more freely. They are willing to have less freedom and lower standards of living to support better "social services". Most Americans are not. Now if more Americans who like big government would move to Canada, and Canadians who like small government would move to the US, it would suit me fine. To each his own, no insult to Canada implied. I'm an internationalist and feel at home almost anywhere in North America or Western Europe. I just prefer to live where hard work and sacrifice are rewarded better.
One has only to look at the former Yugoslavia to realise how fortunate we are to live in either Canada or the US
