I think dragonpawn has a point.
The majority of the worlds base silicon does come from Japan as does the leadframes for packaging as does the plastic used to encapsulate the devices.

And apparently the Japanese are way behind in Y2K compliance.

So any interruption in supply could have devastating consequences for the industry.
