<<Another disadvantage of W-CDMA over the Q's flavor is that "untoast" won't run on it. I'll bet you didn't know that.>>

Save your, er... my money, Caxton. I am absolutely certain that I didn't know that.

And here I thought that "GSM is Toast" was just an off the cuff quip. I'll bet you had everyone fooled all along! Except maybe Ramsey or MIT-Mike. ; )

Hitachi Debuts Windows CE-based Handheld PCs Compliant with cdmaOne

June 1, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Hitachi Ltd. unveiled two new models of its line of Windows CE-based PERSONA handheld personal computers.
They have a communications interface compliant with CDMA-type digital mobile phones for use in cdmaOne services.
The two models, the HPW-600JC and the HPW-600JCM, have different memory capacities. The A5-size devices are equipped with a 7.5-in. color STN liquid-crystal display (LCD) monitor that provides a resolution of 640 x 480 dots (VGA). They are high-end machines to the HPW-230JC, which the company released in November 1998. The HPW-230JC has a screen resolution of 640 x 240 dots (half VGA).
The HPW-600JC has a 16MB memory and the HPW-600JCM has a memory capacity of 32MB. The electronics company is aiming the HPW-600JC at individual users and its retail price is open. Hitachi estimates that it will be priced around 100,000 yen, while the HPW-600JCM is aimed at corporate users and is listed for 148,000 yen. (120.57 yen = US$1)

The new PERSONA models have a communications interface that allows a direct connection to a mobile phone via a special cable (optional), and they do not need a PC card adapter to connect.

The maximum data communications rate of a cdmaOne digital mobile phone is 14.4kbps, faster than that with a personal digital cellular (PDC)-format counterpart. Also, cdmaOne mobile phones have less potential for trouble during communications. Hitachi said that compliance with the cdmaOne format is advantageous.

The communications interface enables connection to a personal handyphone system (PHS) terminal in the PHS Internet access forum (PIAFS) method and a maximum data communications speed of 32kbps, as well as a PDC-format digital mobile phone and maximum data communications speed of 9.6kbps. It also accommodates a fax
modem compliant with V.90/K56flex with a 56kbps speed, which allows a connection through an analog telephone line.
Additionally, the new devices have a USB interface, a PC card slot (TYPE II), a compact flash card slot and an infrared communication port. The microprocessor is the SH-4, Hitachi said. The operating system is the Windows CE Handheld PC Professional Edition, version 3.0. The ATOK Pocket for Windows CE software for inputting kana-kanji (Japanese characters), also is pre-installed. The power source is an AC adapter or a lithium-ion battery. The battery allows the
unit to operate for a maximum of nine hours or four hours of continuous operation. The dimensions are 219.8mm wide by 158.5mm deep by 29.5mm high, and the devices weigh about 920g including batteries.
Hitachi plans to produce 5,000 units of the two models a month.

Unified telecom standards supported

CHINA supports the convergence of different standards for third-generation mobile
telecommunications and plans to commercialize the system between the years 2002 and
2003, an information industry official said yesterday in Beijing.

"The Chinese Government actively participates in the standardization process of
third-generation mobile telecommunication systems. We have offered our technology and
proposals to that end," said Wen Ku, vice-director of the science and technology department
with the Ministry of Information Industry (MII). Wen was talking at the 17th Meeting of the
8/1 Task Group with the Radio Committee of The International Telecommunications Union
(ITU-R).

The 12-day routine meeting is to discuss and define detailed parameters to be used to set
standards for third-generation mobile telecommunications, also called IMT-2000.

The final proposal will be set and approved in October this year at the last meeting of the 8/1
Task Group.

In an effort to standardize technologies related with third-generation mobile
telecommunication systems, the ITU has started evaluating various standards since 1985 and
has received 15 different proposals by last June.

China, with the world largest mobile phone market potential, plays a key role in the
standardization drive.

In June last year, China submitted a technology standard proposal (TD-SCDMA) to the ITU
in an attempt to gain a position in future standardization procedures related to IMT-2000.

However, the ITU failed to reach a uniform set of standards because of various interests
represented by world telecom giants.

The typical candidate standards are the Wideband-Code Division Multiple Access
(W-CDMA) favoured by European and Japanese companies, and the CDMA2000
supported by North American companies.
