in a recent interview between roger ebert and george lucas, ebert posted the same question to lucas: lucas stated, and I am paraphrasing, that the energy doors were a plot device he used so that we could see the three characters interactions. Such as qui-gon meditating, Obi-wan anxiously awaiting his chance to help, and Darth mauls lack of self control, and animal like pacing. The doors enable the characters, as well as the audience to see what is happening to them without being able to help each other. Lucas also stated he will try to clarify this in the phantom special edition 20 years from now.

Darth Sidious's well trained apprentice Darth Maul can only defeat one jedi at a time. The combine force of Qui Gon Dong and Obi-Wang Ka Chovi kind of balance out the fight. Is kind of silly to see Darth Maul get chopped in half by obi-won's light saber, knowing the skillfull Dark Mall can easily dodge or block obi's light saber. Lucas??
