I asked MXTR IR how they intended to compete with SEG's U4 drive. The response today was that Maxtor is actively and successfully selling drives for computer systems below $1,000.

They are currently focusing in the segments at the upper end of the sub-$1,000 market; say .. $699 and above because those customers tend to value what Maxtor has to offer.

Their plan, which i think they outlined in the last CC, is to develop a "cost-optimized single platter platform" for their 5400 RPM drive.

Catherine Hartsog indicated that they are actively working on the "cost-optimized single platter platform", and have made significant progress toward that goal. She would not comment on when an announcement on the new drive would come out.
