Dipy, you're right, only 15 of the 1972 Nifty Fifty beat the S&P500 for the 1972-97 period.

Another interesting observation:

The average December 1972 P/E for the Nifty Fifty was 41.9 times earnings.

11 of the 12 NF companies with the poorest return in the 72-97 period had P/Es above 41.9 in December 1972

Only 3 of the top performing 13 NF companies (those with highest 72-97 return)had P/Es above 41.9 in December of 1972
