Calgary Herald today said that the TEGs are being used to produce electricity that is driven into the ground around the pipeline. This has the effect of inhibiting rust on the pipe. I have no idea why TEGs would be more cost effective than regular hydro-electric power from a plant, except to guess that it has to do with the proximity to the closest transmission grid.

Well the cost needed to build and maintain a powerline to get alittle
power here and there, makes it very uneconomic. Plus add in the all
the power meters to measure the power produced makes it very unfeasible.
It is much better to have one large Power Utility or use these SOFC
where a power line already exists.

Sure WindPower wind farms generate Megawatts of power in a small area. Not strung out over several thousand kilometers in various types
of terrain.

Currently, industrial plants that do use alot of electrical power do have a power plant on site buring waste products to power steam turbines or even hydro power if resources exist nearby. SOFC could cetainly be used if feasible.

When there is an increased need for electricity there is also an increase demand for Natural gas from utilities for their Ngas power plants. If there are too many SOFC needing Natural Gas there could be a shortage of Natural Gas. Natural Gas prices are currently going up due to the summer A/C demand.

What is the need, possibly the need could be to help offset increased power demands which are being experienced by the utility companies.
