Sam,

The story about Petrie Stores is interesting. Actually, Berkshire Hathaway used to be a company wasn't it? Now they just own pieces of other companies but Warren Buffet has plenty of value in his shares.

Something seems to be missing in the valuation of Seagate. How can the disk drive unit be worth less than $3 billion when they have $3 billion in sales in 6 months. Their earning will probably be $3 billion in 5 or 6 years. It sure does not act like an Internet stock.

Sam,

I have read your posts on the Veritas deal and wondered if anybody has sat down to calculate the "cash equivalent/marketable securities" value for SEG. Perhaps last summer would have been a more opportune time to do a fundamental value assessment. (Because it was a clear value play at the time.)

I read recently that Dragon Systems is ready for an IPO.
I find the potential for voice recognition software (of this particular variety) to be immense even though there are other alternatives out there.

As you are aware, SEG has a substantial holding in SanDisk.
I have a long position in SNDK so it would be nice to know if the thread has any idea what might be up between these two companies. I noticed recently if you do a tech search for "SanDisk" on most of the CMPnet sites you end up with a Seagate banner. Just a coincidence?

techweb.com

If anybody has done any research into SEG holdings and has a rough figure with up-to-date share prices, please post it.
