"remote power generation" is exactly right. Grid power costs anywhere from 6 to 14 cents per kwh, but costs $1000 per pole to connect it.

TEG power costs a few thousand dollars up front, and a bit of natural gas to power it. For low power draws (1000 watts or less) such as cathodic protection, TEGs are practical. For anything else, they are not. They are far too inefficient and expensive.
