The Russian losses at the hands of the germans were due more to Soviet military incompetence than anything else.

And that incompetence was primarily due to Stalin liquidating the greater part of his experienced and knowledegable officer corps.

Other than that, you're quite right. The 1939 non-aggression pact between Germany and Russia was nothing more than than breathing space for the inevitable clash between Communism and National Socialism.

And this hatred had its roots in Hitler's hatred of German Communists who were his greatest impediment to consolidating his power earlier.
