there are oil eating bacteria but bioremediation can be achieved without adding outside bugs: I use an organic mixture that stimulates the existing bacteria to speed up the process. In sensitive aquatic areas you want to control the variables. We clean up contaminated groundwater in about a week. One of the engineering firms we use calls our stuff "Viagra for Bugs". Very descriptive of the process. <G> We avoid outside bugs in most processes with the exception of animal lagoons which we bomb with bugs and our little viagra type mixture.

The most important process in a spill is containment. Then various methods can be used to retrieve the oil. Containment is of course most difficult in heavy seas, like the spill off the Oregon coast this past year.
