Background on Cal Canal (excerpt from Kerm Yerman's newsletter)... -------------------------------------------------------- Berkley Petroleum to boost Cal Canal field production Another chapter is opening in the life of the Cal Canal Gas field off the eastern flank of the South Belridge field and approximately 17 miles southeast of the Bellevue discovery off the east side of the Lost Hills field. The Cal Canal field was a discovery by Oxy Petroleum Inc., which wildcatted the area with Chevron-Cal Canal No. 1 on Sec. 31, 28S-22E, taking the well to total depth of 11,825 feet approximately 21Ú2 miles east of the South Belridge field. Occidental completed the well for undisclosed initial production in the Stevens zone that originally won for Cal Canal designation as an oil field in September 1977. The Stevens pool was identified as a retrograde condensate type and Cal Canal soon became known as the Cal Canal Gas field. Etchegoin discovery production followed in June 1981. Development of the field earned for Cal Canal a historic first. Spacing set in Cal Canal. After a hearing before the State Oil and Gas Supervisor, 40-acre spacing was established for the Stevens zone in the Cal Canal field. This action resulted after Oxy Petroleum Inc. filed a petition for a well-spacing plan. An appeal to the supervisor's order was submitted by one of the affected parties. A response was under preparation by the Director of Conservation at the end of the year. The spacing decision was precedent-setting. For the first time in the history of the Division of Oil and Gas, spacing other than the basic one acre was set by the State Oil and Gas Supervisor under authority granted by Section 3609, Division 3, of the Public Resources Code. Coming up now is another move toward increasing production from Cal Canal Gas. The operator is Berkley Petroleum Inc. of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The well to be drilled is Berkley Cal Canal No. 1 on Sec. 32, 28S-22E, located from the southwest corner of the section 1,150 feet north and 1,200 feet east. Consultants are from Driltek Inc. of Bakersfield. Cumulative production from the Cal Canal Gas field stands at approximately 9.9 billion cubic feet of gas and 2.7 million barrels of condensate. Production from the Cal Canal Gas field in January of this year averaged 264,000 cubic feet of gas per day and 77 barrels per day of condensate. Sixteen producing wells were on production, including one on production from Etchegoin zone and 15 on production from the Stevens zone gas. -------------------------------------
