CHINESE FIRM CHALLENGES MICROSOFT'S INTERNET TV PROJECT

BEIJING - The "Venus Plan" for internet TV launched recently by Microsoft's Bill Gates in China has been challenged by Chinese firm, HiSense in Shandong province. HiSense has launched its "Family Network Express" comprising an independently developed TV set-top box and palm-sized computer. Annual demand for the product is expected to reach between 2,000 and 3,000 sets. HiSense generated 8.2 billion yuan (US$991.5 million) in sales income and over 400 million yuan in profit and taxes in 1998.
