R.G.... Ask your broker to check the split record back through 1985. Standard & Poor's should publish this. Then you can determine how many shares the original 20 shares have become. Complication: If LLY split in 1985, then you have to know whether your friend's stock was purchased before or after that split.

here is what Yahoo has about stock splits for LLY

Splits: 30-Jan-86 [2:1], 1-May-89 [2:1], 21-Dec-95 [2:1], 16-Oct-97 [2:1]

just go to Yahoo finance and get chart with MAX time interval
