BCE EMERGIS SIGNS BILL PRESENTMENT CONTRACT June 2, 1999 MONTREAL, QUEBEC-- Concludes negotiations with company representing Canada's leading financial institutions - e-route inc. BCE Emergis today announced that it has signed a 10-year exclusive contract with e-route inc. for the provision of an electronic bill presentment (EBP) solution. This contract concludes the exclusive negotiations with e-route which were announced in early 1999. EBP is the delivery of bills over the Internet to customers for easy online viewing and optional payment. e-route is a company owned by Canada Trust, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, Mouvement des caisses Desjardins, National Bank of Canada, Royal Bank of Canada and TD Bank Financial Group. The pilot project is scheduled to begin in the fall of 1999 and BCE Emergis and e-route anticipate full production by spring 2000. The first billers to join this electronic bill presentment initiative are TD Visa, National Bank MasterCard, Royal Bank Visa and Bell Canada. "Electronic Bill Presentment will give Canadians a faster, easier and more efficient way of viewing and optionally paying their bills," said Bryan Kerdman, CEO of e-route inc. "With more than two-thirds of all repetitive bills expected to be presented online by 2005, e-route is paving the way for a new era of commerce in Canada." BCE Emergis will provide the technology and will operate and support the overall solution for e-route, utilizing software from its partners Microsoft Canada and TransPoint. The service will transparently link participating financial institutions, billers and customers, enabling customers to receive, review, and, if they choose, pay their bills online. "We are proud to work with e-route on one of the largest e-commerce initiatives in North America," said Brian Edwards, President and Chief Executive Officer, BCE Emergis. "This clearly demonstrates tremendous leadership on the part of the Canadian banking industry. By offering their customers more choice and more convenience, by letting them receive and pay their bills on line, they are significantly enhancing the development of Canada's position in the world of e-commerce." Established in 1998 and owned by Canada Trust, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, Mouvement des caisses Desjardins, National Bank of Canada, Royal Bank of Canada and TD Bank Financial Group, e-route was created to provide its member financial institutions with the technology and infrastructure to deliver electronic banking solutions.
