I somehow doubt Schwab will offer any compromises. They have been successful in being the leaders in the dicount brokerage industry, and they have been very successful at it. They hardly flinched when all these start-ups were offering $10, $8, $5, commish. I don't think they are going to react to the merrill plan. They are more like: "you guys do it your way, and we'll do it ours..."

spoke w/ my MER broker, with whom i have a signifcant (Ok, to me) bond portfolio...in the worst case, he doesn't want to lose my bond activity....here is my best understanding
1) fee is 1% of assets under management, up to first 1M, minimum of $1500
2) unlimited trading
3) he hesitated when asked "options also"? ...YES

I am also impressed with the program...some brokers make money charging $5 per trade...i imagine, with enough efficiencies, they can reduce trading costs significantly...assume $1....i would have to make
1500 trades for this to be breakeven for them, and then they would be losign money on trades...although making money on having my assets available for equity....they will, i imagine, try to upsell some folks into using their services for buying bonds, mutual funds, etc...remember, there are a lot of commiss based brokers/salesfolks there...
also, this program (fixed fee) will start July 1...the $29.95 a trade starts in December....i think i read that retail trading makes up about 10% of there revenue....if they have a user friendly interface, and a good short inventory, they've got me sold....
There are some analogies to BKS/AMZN....can MER become an etailer, so contrary to the wall street image?
LOL
