June 2 - Rambus and PC133 DRAM battle heats up. AMD and IBM are now
saying they will use the new PC133 memory instead of exclusively using Intel
supported Rambus D-RDRAM.
Per CNet, a spokesperson for AMD claims that PC100 memory will initially be
used in K-7 computers due out this June. Then PC133 memory, which provides as
much as 25% more peak bandwidth than PC 100 memory (1,033 Mbps vs. 800
Mbps), will be used in later K-7 releases. Not until sometime next year will K-7
systems use Rambus DRAM which provides double the bandwidth (1,600 Mbps)
of PC100 DRAM.
In a related CNet story, IBM says it will now use PC133 DRAM, instead of
Rambus DRAM, in its low-end computers that will be produced in the second half
of the year. This news made Rambus stock plunge 13% yesterday and Intel's stock
followed with a 6% drop.

Please see our article, 1999 Hardware Predictions for more information of PC133
and Rambus D-RDRAM.
