Rob, The technology is quite good enough, albeit costly, to do the blobal job. the problem is there are too many alternate ways to do the same thing over 90% of the globe. Using local cellular does not cut the cost to the pure cellular level and the few places where Iridium is a monopoly are meeting client resistance at $3-8 per minute. Have you looked at subscriber numbers?, there are more cellular customers in a town of 200,000 that Iridium has on earth.
They are trying to cement local monopolies or their ground stations to force local cells out of the loop, but the huge volume potential of local cellular kills this. Even when the local partner gets 75% of the $ from connects it is peanuts.
It is also frozen and cannot be upgraded(is that right?, does anyone know how versatile the onboard electronics are?)
