Yours is very informative information! ARET is just that to the MM'S, a figure of speech.

A couple of market makers told me that regardless of anything else they must keep an orderly flow of buys and sells. They are mandated by law to buy and sell, or maintain a market in the stocks that they make a market in.

I never did fully understand it. But, you're educating me a little.
