Ramtron and Rohm Renew FRAM Memory Foundry Agreement

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 2, 1999--Ramtron International Corporation (Nasdaq:RMTR - news) announced today that it has entered into a new, long-term foundry agreement with Rohm Company Ltd. of Japan.

The agreement calls for Rohm to continue the manufacture of Ramtron's low-density ferroelectric random access memory products for five years. As a fabless semiconductor company, Ramtron relies on external foundry sources for its product supplies. Rohm has been manufacturing low-density FRAM® memory products in commercial volumes for Ramtron since 1997.

''During the course of our relationship, Rohm has made excellent progress in establishing a cost-effective FRAM product supply for Ramtron,'' said Don Carrigan, Ramtron vice president and general manager. ''Rohm is currently the leader in commercial FRAM memory production, and we are pleased to continue our working relationship. Going forward, we hope to leverage Rohm's manufacturing experience to bring additional cost, performance and technology improvements to our FRAM memory products.''

FRAM memories are compatible with conventional memory applications but include the company's breakthrough ferroelectric memory cell technology that enables performance, power and durability advantages that are not currently available with competitive nonvolatile memory products. Current applications for Ramtron's FRAM memory devices include electronic power meters, smart cards, test instrumentation, factory automation, laser printers, security systems, and other systems that require reliable storage of data without an external power source.

In addition to Rohm, Ramtron has FRAM licensing and manufacturing agreements with top semiconductor producers, including Fujitsu, Hitachi and Toshiba. These agreements provide for royalty considerations and manufacturing capacity that can be utilized by Ramtron to develop its own product business. The company also has FRAM licensing and/or development agreements with Samsung, ULVAC and Asahi Chemical.

Ramtron is the leading developer of ferroelectric random access memory (FRAM) products. The company also develops and markets ultra-high-performance EDRAM memory products through its wholly owned subsidiary, Enhanced Memory Systems, Inc. Ramtron holds 148 international and U.S. patents covering its proprietary technologies.
