No they weren't. AOL's model was turned upside down. The Internet was supposedly going to erode their proprietary model, and flat-rate pricing was supposedly going to decimate their revenues. They were facing a huge buildout expense, and they were losing subscribers to ISP's because of poor service, inability to log on, and call drops.
