SteveG, A bit off topic, but addresses what you pointed out yesterday as to WinStar's need to obtain longhaul in Europe and shows how a partnership with an European carrier could potentially benefit WinStar. NEW MARKET RESEARCH REPORT ANNOUNCEMENT FROM PHILLIPS A Service of Phillips TelecomWeb - telecomweb.com =============================================================== June 3, 1999 RESEARCH SNAPSHOT ON EUROPEAN DARK FIBRE INTERESTED IN ACQUIRING DARK FIBER IN EUROPE? BETTER ACT FAST, SAYS NEW STUDY (To access a free copy of the study overview, visit: tarifica.com A survey of Dark Fiber availability and pricing in Europe, conducted over the past three months by Phillips Tarifica Ltd., the London-based sister company of Phillips, offers some hope for new market entrants - providing they move swiftly. The survey confirms that Dark Fiber is strategically important to companies planning pan-European operations, but says that its current availability is limited largely because a significant proportion is now controlled by entities within operating groups associated with British Telecommunications plc. However, the report identifies where new opportunities are arising in Europe, owning companies and pricing levels, and suggests forward strategies for network growth. The report was sponsored by European and U.S. service providers and equipment suppliers, and provides the first assessment of Dark Fiber availability and controlling groups across the U.K., Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden. New suppliers of Dark Fiber, were also identified - a new sub-oceanic network, for example, is being built between the U.K. and the continent - with prices and backhaul rates revealed. Other new operators emerged, which the report details, together with the plans of some of the larger utilities to expand Dark Fiber networks, augmented by DWDM, for cross- border routes, and even into Eastern Europe. Linking up with these networks could become of crucial importance to operators extending or building networks. Pricing also revealed the advantages of owning Dark Fiber. On one route from Paris to Frankfurt for example, the report reveals a differential of more than 500:1 between the retail and Dark Fiber price per fiber kilometer. The report suggests the future photonic network as a successor to legacy networks in Europe, the arrival of "Dark Wavelengths" as the base of a future trading commodity and the potential for fundamental changes to the business model. Major results of this research will be revealed at the Carrier Wholesale Market - Summer '99 Conference in Dublin, June 15-18, 1999.
