Dell Moneyline story notes and link - for those who can take more ugly news

3 analysts spoke - one believed that Dell will be an "underperformer" - another that the signs were "ominous" - Battaglia appeared neutral mentioning effect of day traders.

Reasons for loss of confidence in Dell:
1. Declining margins
2. belief in Y2K spending slowdown
3. Nothing in business plan beyond the PC

(my comment - 1 and 3 are true and the business reasons for which need to be publicly addressed by MD, and while he's at it, he could clarify the demand vis a vis Y2K on an industry-wide and Dell specific basis)

Relative 1999 market performance
1. Dell down 10%
2. Naz up 10%
3. Other PC makers have double digit gains (HP, IBM, Gateway)
4. Dell placed by Lou's remarks in same classification as CPQ (the two losers in the PC industry)

(My comment - 1, 2 and 3 are true observations and point out that there is a crisis of confidence in Dell management - MD needs to be more communicative, #4 is a smear)

To Shankland: You guys just don't get it!! Its what
the street is EXPECTING not what DELL has been
delivering lately. Why do you think it has dropped
from the lower 50s earlier this year to around 33
lousy bucks now?? Even Michael Dell isn't coming
out to defend the company lately. Dell may miss
their quarter this time and if it occurs your looking
at a move into the mid to upper 20s. Good Luck with
once great stock!!!
