How would you know that, since nobody here seems to be familiar even peripherally with anyone who ever attended a boarding school?

Oh, really? And what evidence do you have to support this statement?

You made our point for us, Ms. Snob.

A.) I already said that I knew quite a few people who went to boarding schools, so I am familiar at least "peripherally";
B.) A prep school is a school dedicated to college preparatory courses. Since most public high- schools also have business, general, and sometimes even vocational programs, it has fallen into disuse for public schools, and is now pretty exclusively used of private schools. Prep schools may be day schools or boarding schools.
C.) When the term is used without additional qualification, it ordinarily refers to boarding schools, as an idiomatic matter. However, it is not hard- and- fast,and it is often worth clarification.
