What was the class size at your boarding school? 12?

<<Some public schools are ok, for example Michael Dell sends his kids to public school.>> I'll bet Dell gives their employees attractive bonuses for acheivement of company goals. What if we made it a goal to raise the average scores on national acheivement tests by 10% over the next 5 years and attached teacher bonuses to the operational strategy to achieve that goal. Most people are pretty pessimistic about the public school system but I think they would be much more inclined to give teachers bonuses for results than pump more money into mismanaged control of social issues.

Here's how to fix the schools. CUT their budgets 10% a year for 5 years. Keep cutting until all there's left are teachers, a principal, and one janitor per school.

Eliminate the Federal Education department and all equivalent state agencies.

And I am totally [semi]serious about this.

Actually, I wasn't commenting on funding levels, just the absurdity of running everything through Washington. They have discovered that class size doesn't matter so much, presumably because teachers do not devote much time to individuals regardless, and there is nothing that mandates such a low class size anyway. Doubling teachers salaries? Do you really think that the smartest and most ambitious students are going to be attracted to teaching elementary, or even high- school, because of that? No, we will just have about the same people we have had all along, getting more money for no particular reason. Some physical plants need overhaul, some don't. It depends on the area.Don't know about textbooks, my sons are in fine condition... The whole idea is to make vouchers widely available, and to make the public schools compete among themselves, too. There are many competing plans. I agree that they should be worth enough to ensure widespread participation...

Michelle-res Otoh I am not opposed to vouchers if we serve ALL students (including troubled kids from undersirable areas). That means vouchers must pay completely for an academic year, otherwise it is discriminatory towards those that can't afford it.

This mode of thinking by liberals always amazes me. Now listen carefully all you liberals out their defending the status quo pathetic government school system.

The above system as described by your liberal hero Michelle is the EXACT system we have in place today!

The wealthy go to decent private schools. The upper middle class live in area's where local levy's pay a large proportion of the local school budget. And the poor get screwed!

Rocket science this isn't! Simply pay the parents what the average cost of sending your children to a government school is for the year. And let them cash that voucher at the school of their choice. Trust the parents to do what is best for their children instead of some liberal loving government paper pusher!

Of course the liberal NEA which pay's off politicians with millions of dollars of funding would never allow this. They don't give a hoot about America's children. Poor or rich. All they care about is the power and money they can get their hands on, and how they can (using socialistic principles) CONTROL, America's parents and children.
