Mike, Have you got any enthusiasm for "Go Linux Go?"

Not really. I wore myself out on the GO JAVA GO cheer:-). The problem Corel is going to have with Linux is how to turn free software into revenue. If they can develop a nice clean install for servers they might have a shot at gaining some share on NT file and print servers but I don't see great revenue in office applications.

Back in the good old days I thought Java could break MS monopoly and finally produce some reliable products were any software company could compete fair and square and the best product would gain market share.

Well as time has passed and 90% of the market is locked into Microslop it sure doesn't look like things have gotten any better. MS OS still sucks.

Linux is definitely the better product as OS goes but considering 90% is locked into MS products it sure doesn't look like companies will be switching in droves anytime soon.

A friend of mine who owns a company is considering RedHat Linux but only as a file and print server. He still plans on using his existing MS office.

The reason he tells me why he wants to switch is that he is tired of rebooting the NT server once a week and he thinks MS liscensing fees per user are way too expensive considering he wants to add more users.

So my thinking is that Corel could make a few buck in the file and print servers if they can make a better product then the rest of the Linux competitors.

JMHO
Mike

Will next office suites be up for rent?
zdnet.com
Corel hopes to get a jump on Microsoft in this emerging market with a program enabling customers to rent the WordPerfect Office 2000 suite and CorelDraw through an ASP. The company plans to launch the service provider program in the second half of the year.

"Many customers, especially in small and medium businesses, see this as a better way to buy and deploy software," said Mark Emond, manager of global volume licensing programs at Corel, in Ottawa.
