Under the heading of "things that are not particularly related to fundamentals but make stocks go up," has anyone noted that when Lucent closes the deal with Ascend that a large hole will open in the S&P 500. Ascend is listed as a computer/networking stock. The biggest stock in the S&P 400 is listed as $13 billion in market cap--that must be old news and the biggest stock is now likely to be QCOM. Q is listed as communications equipment. It is way larger than the median mid cap stock. My guess is that they are next to move on up.
