X, i would expect to see between 2-3 billion shares traded on a truly climactic day. of course that would be an extreme down day where prices fall off a cliff. currently i see two possible resolutions, near term. since the bond looks oversold and sits at important long term support, it stands to reason that it will see a sharp bounce soon. the question is only, what will be the reason for the bounce. possibility one: a weak jobs report, which would rally stocks and bonds together. possibility two: money fleeing to a safe haven due to some kind of financial shock. the current low volume reflects uncertainty; it can be assumed that both potential buyers and sellers are nervously watching every piece of economic data coming their way, lest they miss out on the next major move. the real test for the stock market will come when it gets *good* news, e.g. weak jobs data on friday. if no sustainable rally can be mounted on good news, we'll know for sure that more trouble looms.

regards,
